In Luke 12 Jesus tells the disciples not to worry about what they will eat or wear because God takes care of the birds and we are more valuable than birds. Then Jesus says something interesting...Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? Since you can't do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest.
Later in this chapter Jesus says not to be afraid because God has been pleased to give us the kingdom and we are to seek his kingdom first and trust that everything we need will be added to us. We see two things in this passage
Jesus is contrasting 2 ways of living. The first is a life apart from God that stresses and strives about taking care of yourself. The second is a life that is one with God and trusts him as the source of everything. On our own we can't do much but with God nothing is impossible. We have often interpreted God and his kingdom as something that we can't touch until we die, but it was about the death of Jesus. His kingdom is within us now and God has given us everything he has. If he gave us Jesus how will he not freely give us all things. We have access now to his Spirit, his mind, his kingdom, his power, his righteousness, his love, his peace, his joy, his grace, his purpose, his health, his energy, his finances, his time, and so much more.
Jesus said the result of all this would be becoming generous because we understand we have a purse that will never wear out and can't be destroyed. What he put within us is unlimited and inexhaustible. We can get rid of the worry and become more generous which will lead us into the true treasure of heaven...Relationships with God and people. When we stop the worry it increases our presence and awareness of ways to be a blessing to others, which enhances our relationships and connection.
As we take communion today let it be a reminder to stop the worry and step into this new way of living.
I am praying for you.
