In Luke 10 is the story of Mary and Martha. Martha invited Jesus into her house and since she was the one who invited Jesus I think she felt the pressure on her to get everything perfect. So she started working away but the whole time she was DISTRACTED and fuming inside because her sister was sitting at the feet of Jesus listening to him. She finally burst out and told Jesus to have Mary help her. But, Jesus said that Martha was worried and stressed out about many things while Mary chose what was best and would not be taken away from her.
For a lot of us, we may think to ourselves, " How are we going to get anything done if we just sit at the feet of Jesus all day. There are things to do." We often get DISTRACTED. To be distracted means you have turned away and are attracted to something else. Your priorities have shifted. Each day we are supposed to be taking action and doing the things we know to do, but not the way Martha took action. Every step is supposed to be done with peace and joy as an act of worship. If you have a busy schedule and a lot to get done in a day the most important thing you can do is take time with Jesus and to listen to him. Why? Because you will come out of that time refreshed and with a different attitude so that when you execute the things you know to do you will do them better and faster. Also, keep in mind that he can give you a better plan and show you how to put all of the steps in order so that you are more efficient.
In the case of Martha her distraction and focus on all of her tasks were actually hurting her relationships with Jesus and with her sister. We could be doing all that we know to do but executing with the wrong attitude and destroying relationships in the process. Make it a priority to listen to Jesus first each day and then go execute with peace and joy because he is with you helping you.
As we take communion today let it be a reminder that we are to step into a new way of living. The pressure is not on us to get it all done in our own strength. We can take the time to get still and listen to Jesus everyday and then go execute what we know to do as an act of worship with peace and joy because he is helping us. If you ever don't know what to do next just get still and listen again.
I am praying for you.
