Good Gifts

God is the source of every good and perfect gift. But, gifts have to be received and valued if they are to have an effect in our lives.

The other day I was reading in Genesis 30 about Leah having children in verses 19-20 it says... Leah conceived again and bore Jacob a sixth son. Then Leah said, “God has presented me with a precious gift.” So she named him Zebulun.

The word for precious in Hebrew is towb which means good, precious, beautiful, pleasing, or perfect. When God gives gifts they are good, precious, perfect, and beautiful. There is a difference between gifts God gives and ones that come from the world.

Jesus said in Matthew 7 and Luke 11...

Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.

“Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts (Luke says the Holy Spirit) to those who ask him!

And 2 Peter 1:3-4 says... His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.

As we take communion today let it be a time to ask for and receive the good and perfect gifts God has for our lives. These good, perfect, and beautiful gifts can create a ripple effect for good across every area of our lives and set us free. These gifts were made available because of the sacrifice of Jesus and the love God has for us, but they must be received and valued.

I am praying for you.

Daniel
