If you are in a totally dark room it can cause you to trip or run into things and it can be hard to know which way to go. Being in the dark can lead to feelings of confusion, hopelessness, powerlessness, and darkness can also feel very heavy. However, when we are in the light it is easy to see things that were causing us to stumble and which way to go.
In Isaiah 61, Jesus said that part of what he came to do was proclaim freedom for captives and release from darkness for the prisoners.
Colossians 1:12-14 says... giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light. 13 For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
Jesus has released us from the darkness and transferred us into the light because of the forgiveness of sins. But, part of living in the light is learning to receive this forgiveness from God, forgiving yourself, and forgiving others. Anytime forgiveness isn't flowing in these three levels it can lead to darkness.
As we take communion today let the breaking of the bread be symbolic of being released from darkness. And as we take the cup let it be symbolic of living a new life in the light where forgiveness flows continually from God, through us, and to others.
I am praying for you.
Daniel
