Here is today's communion meditation.
Yesterday I was reading in Matthew 21 about the parable of the tenants. In the story Jesus says that the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who had a vineyard that he rented out but they tenants were evil and when he sent his servants and son to get his share of the crops they beat the servants and killed his son. This parable reminded me of a passage in my book Pockets of Prosperity.
Here is the passage.
At one point in time in my family’s house, we had a basement apartment that we rented to tenants. We owned the house, but people rented from us. There was a door that connected the main area to the basement and usually, with most tenants, we kept the door locked and bolted shut. While we owned the basement, we never went down there unless we had permission from the tenant or unless something was wrong that required us to go downstairs. At the same time, the tenants normally didn’t come into our upstairs space unless we invited them. We got to know some of the tenants well, and we’d spend some time with them either in the basement or upstairs, but we still didn’t enter each other’s space unless invited. However, we would occasionally have friends or family members stay in our basement. During these times, the door to the upstairs would stay open all the time. We would go downstairs with them and they would hang out upstairs with us. We and the guests had access to the upstairs and downstairs, and it was always a lot of fun. The house was one instead of two separate spaces.
In a similar way, God wants heaven and earth to be one. This is his big vision. He owns the earth. He owns the whole world—but in Jesus’s parable in Matthew 21:33, he said that God leased it to tenants. God could come down to the earth whenever he wants because he owns it. But to honor his tenants, he only comes down to help with things when invited or if there are major issues he needs to address. At the same time, in the normal arrangement we don’t have access into heaven unless we are invited up. Still, God has made us family. He opened the doors, and we have access to heaven all the time. God has access into our lives now, and we have access to his. Much of the process God takes us through is unlearning what the world has taught us in order to get to a place where our lives are one with God again.
As we take communion today let it be a reminder that because of Jesus the door has been opened and we can live a life as one with God.
I am praying for you.
